Animal waste

The Greek Animal Production industry is fragmented in small to very small farms and these farms are scattered across Greece.

The animal waste streams can be divided into the following categories:

• Manure from swine/pig, cattle and hen farms.
• Dunk from sheep, goat and poultry breading farms.
• Bedding material.

Every waste stream has its distinct physicochemical characteristics, which dictate the appropriate management method. In particular, cattle manure must be collected and utilized within a couple of days, as methane is emitted into the atmosphere. The comparative impact of CH4 on climate change is over 20 times greater than CO2 over a 100-year period. Poultry litter and swine/pig manure have elevated concentrations of nitrogen, rendering, in most cases, their co-treatment imperative.
