WOM Usage and risk

Waste lubricating oils is an essential element of everyday life of many citizens as they are necessary for the operation of machines and mechanisms. During their use, oils lose their properties, thus they are discarded as waste and replaced with new oils. In Greece, it is estimated that 60% of oils available in the market become waste.

Waste lubricating oils are hazardous to public health and the environment because they contain high concentrations of toxic and carcinogenic substances, like heavy metals, poly-chlorinated hydrocarbons, poly-aromatic compounds etc. The uncontrolled disposal causes pollution of aboveground water, groundwater and soil. Specifically, 1L WLO can contaminate up to one million liters of drinking water. Combustion creates gas emissions problems.
